Retired doctor detained for photographing Iskeçe Madrassa without permission

Hikmet Cemiloğlu, a retired doctor from Iskeçe, was detained by the police for taking unauthorized photographs of the Iskeçe Madrassa.

The incident occurred when Cemiloğlu, who lives near the madrassa, took pictures of the building around midday. Following a complaint from the madrassa's director, Cemiloğlu was taken into custody by the police. After giving a four-hour statement, his phone was confiscated.

Speaking to GÜNDEM about the event, Cemiloğlu explained, “Everyone knows that I have an interest in photographing historical buildings and properties, especially those owned by the foundation. I’ve always taken pictures of such places in Iskeçe as part of my research. I knew that the madrassa had relocated here at the start of this educational year, so I wanted to take a picture of it. While photographing the building, someone, who I later learned was the director, asked me why I was taking photos and if I had permission. Shortly after, the police arrived, took me to the station, and confiscated my phone. They told me I would receive a summons from the prosecutor's office. I didn’t know that permission was required to photograph the madrassa. If I had known, I wouldn’t have taken the pictures. I told the director about my intentions, but they still called the police. Despite my explanation, I was taken to the station, where I spent four hours, and my phone was seized. I was also informed that I would receive a summons. I leave the judgment of this situation to the public.”
