Özgür Ferhat slams Mitsotakis Government over economic and social policies

Özgür Ferhat, Member of Parliament for the New Left (Nea Aristera) from the Rhodope region, has issued a strong criticism of the Mitsotakis government, accusing it of implementing policies that negatively affect large segments of society.

In a written statement, Ferhat argued that current government practices in the fields of economy, social policy, education, and healthcare are working against the public interest and deepening existing social problems.

“Wages Are Eroding, Cost of Living Is Rising”

Ferhat stated that government policies have led to a decline in real wages, shrinking family incomes, and a sharp increase in the cost of living. He also claimed that key sectors such as agriculture, livestock farming, and food production have been weakened.

According to Ferhat, labor rights have been rolled back, while small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are struggling under heavy tax burdens. He further warned that the education system is being pushed backward and that public healthcare services are facing serious structural problems.

“Instead of resolving social problems, the current administration is deepening them,” Ferhat said.

“Government Serves Powerful Economic Interests”

In his statement, Ferhat accused the Mitsotakis government of prioritizing the interests of powerful economic elites rather than those of society as a whole. He stressed that a future progressive government must pursue fundamentally different policies focused on social justice and equality.

Policy Proposals for a New Period

Outlining his proposals for the coming period, Ferhat called for:

  • Lower taxes,
  • Price stability for basic consumer goods,
  • Improved living conditions,
  • Expansion of employment opportunities.

He also emphasized the need to increase pensions, raise wages closer to the European Union average, and provide direct support to genuine producers in agriculture and livestock farming.

Call for Stronger Public Services

Ferhat further urged the implementation of protective economic measures for businesses and the private sector, while underlining that education and healthcare services must remain public, accessible, and free of charge.

Concluding his statement, he said that addressing social problems through institutional and social solutions is essential, adding:

“We will continue to defend these demands both in Parliament and on the ground, and to pursue our struggle through collective political initiatives.”
