New Left MPs call for the establishment of a land transport equivalent for Thrace

Nine MPs from the New Left party, led by Xanthi MP Hüseyin Zeybek, have submitted a parliamentary question advocating for the establishment of a land transport equivalent (LTE) for the Region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace (REMTh). The initiative is co-signed by Rodopi MP Özgür Ferhat and the New Left Parliamentary Group President, Alexis Haritsis.

The proposal seeks to introduce an LTE system for Thrace, modeled after the one implemented for the Greek islands. The MPs highlight that, despite Thrace's strategic geographical location near European markets, its competitive advantage is undermined by:

The neglected state of the railway network.
Underdeveloped port infrastructure.
Excessive toll costs.
These deficiencies have driven local residents and businesses into financial hardship and uncertainty.

Strong Criticism of the Government
The MPs criticized Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis for unfulfilled promises, recalling his commitments made in Komotini two years ago to implement the LTE for Thrace, which have yet to materialize.

Questions Directed at the Government
The MPs demand clear answers on the following issues:

Why has the commitment to the LTE not been implemented yet?
When will the government establish the necessary framework for the LTE?
What steps are being taken to end Thrace’s railway isolation?
When will the railway network in Thrace be fully restored for both passenger and freight services?

Infrastructure for Development
Finally, the MPs emphasized the importance of a modern railway network, as outlined in the findings of the Cross-Party Committee for Thrace’s Development. They urged the government to take immediate and meaningful action to strengthen the region’s infrastructure and economy.
