Municipality of Komotini Schools support recycling again this year

The Municipality of Komotini successfully concluded the “Let’s Recycle” Marathon, conducted through the Followgreen app, with an award ceremony held on the morning of May 19 at the Tsanakleio Mansion courtyard, filled with the joyful sounds of children.
Prior to the ceremony, students enjoyed activities at the Followgreen environmental park. This year’s marathon saw participation from 48 schools, which collectively gathered 6,739 kilograms of recyclable materials across six categories: paper, plastic, aluminum, cooking oil, clothes & shoes, and batteries.
In addition to the impressive collection, the recycling platform users donated a total of 174,396 reward points to schools, further supporting their efforts.
The environmental impact of this year’s recycling achievements includes:
- Saving 4,355 kilograms of paper, equivalent to saving a forest of 107 trees
- Recycling 98 kilograms of aluminum, resulting in an energy saving of 1,372 kilowatt-hours
- Collecting 1,802 kilograms of plastic, preventing 1,288 kilograms of greenhouse gas emissions caused by plastic production
- Gathering 152 kilograms of batteries, saving about 80% of the energy required to produce new batteries
- Processing 110 kilograms of used cooking oil, enabling production of biodiesel which emits 90% less greenhouse gases compared to traditional fuels
Deputy Mayor Dimitris Politiadis, responsible for Administration, Coordination, and Daily Life, attended the event. He praised the students for their progress and effort in recycling, congratulating the entire educational community, including parents and teachers, for spreading the message of environmental responsibility.
Certificates of outstanding participation were awarded to the principals and representatives of the top-performing schools, alongside individual awards for each school. All participating schools received plaques recognizing their contribution to the marathon.
The “Let’s Recycle” Marathon and award ceremony were supported by local companies including Eco EPE, Papadimos Papakis OE, Epigrafes Adamidis, Mesogeios AE, KatheKoutiMetrae, and Combatt. The Exagono Youth and Volunteer Center actively participated in the outdoor activities and contributed to the recognition of school units under the Komotini Municipality.
