Mufti of Xanthi: The attack on the mosque in Ilıca targeted social peace

Mufti of Xanthi Trampa stated that yesterday, in Ilıca village of Xanthi, a person entered the mosque and tore up the Quran, targeting social peace.

In the Friday sermon he gave at the mosque where the attack was carried out, Trampa said that harming human dignity and attacking sacred values cannot be described as freedom.

"The attack on the Qur'an here yesterday (Thursday) targeted not only Muslims, but also humanity and social peace. Freedom of expression cannot make insulting any faith and its members seem innocent." said Trampa, pointing out that freedom cannot give anyone the authority to violate another's right.

Emphasizing that freedom requires respecting everyone's beliefs and thoughts, Trampa underlined that taking part in such attacks is a common duty of all people, not just Muslims.

Trampa said, "These attacks are trying to cover the sun with mud or, as the Qur'an puts it, to try to extinguish the light of Allah with their mouths. However, they will be frustrated." he said.

Turkey's Consul General to Komotini, Aykut Unal, also visited the mosque where the incident took place and offered Friday prayers there.

Stating that Türkiye has always been on the side of the Western Thrace Turkish minority, Ünal wished the people well soon.

Head of the Western Thrace Turkish Minority Advisory Board İbrahim Şerif, Xanthi Deputies Hüseyin Zeybek and Burhan Baran, Mustafaçova Mayor Rıdvan Delihüseyin, Xanthi Turkish Union President Ozan Ahmetoğlu, WTMGA President Hüseyin Baltacı, Mustafaçova Municipality Main Opposition Chairman Cemil Kabza, DEB Party Deputy Chairman Bahri Belço, Vice President of the Çınar Association Bilal Budur and representatives of other institutions and organizations attended the Friday prayer in Ilıca.
