MP Ferhat addresses issue with new ID card birthplace information
Özgür Ferhat, Member of Parliament for the New Left Party in the Rodopi region, has called for urgent action regarding a problem encountered during the issuance of new identity cards in Greece, specifically concerning the recording of birthplace information.
Ferhat highlighted that many citizens wishing to obtain new identity cards are facing significant difficulties, as the system no longer accepts the previously used birthplace information. In particular, the issue arises with the birthplace "ΜΠΟΥΡΣΑ- ΤΟΥΡΚΙΑΣ" (Bursa, Türkiye), which was previously listed on old identity cards. However, the new system now only accepts the place name as "ΠΡΟΥΣΑ, ΤΟΥΡΚΙΑΣ" in Greek or "Bursa" in the Latin alphabet.
The Core Problem
The problem stems from the fact that the use of "ΜΠΟΥΡΣΑ" is embedded in the official registry system, and citizens are not responsible for this. Despite this, the authorities are not making administrative adjustments, instead requiring citizens to file lawsuits to correct the birthplace information. This not only leads to unnecessary and costly legal processes but also creates practical issues for citizens who are unable to obtain their new identity cards.
Ferhat's Statement
In a statement issued by his press office, Ferhat emphasized that this simple issue could be resolved with an administrative decision or a directive. He called for urgent measures to be implemented to prevent citizens from facing unnecessary legal battles.
Ferhat has raised the following questions to the relevant government ministers:
- Are you planning to take urgent action to prevent citizens from being subjected to unnecessary legal processes?
- Will you issue clear instructions to relevant public institutions, including the Civil Registry, Consulates, and Greek Police, allowing them to make these corrections directly?
