MP Burhan Baran questions Government on freight train services in Thrace
Currently, Thrace is connected to the national rail network only through a single-track, non-electrified line. Passenger services on the main axis have been suspended since 2020, with buses operating as replacements between Dedeağaç and İskeçe.
In contrast, major upgrade projects are under way in northern Greece—such as the Dedeağaç–Çirmen line, co-financed by the EU for improved links with Bulgaria. Meanwhile, multiple freight operators are already active in Greece, capable of running full 750-ton trains. According to Burhan Baran, this makes the operation of commercial rail services through Thrace towards Thessaloniki, Athens, and other trade hubs both realistic and necessary, provided infrastructure improvements are implemented by OSE (the Hellenic Railways Infrastructure Manager).
Activating the line for freight transport, he argued, would lower logistics costs for local producers, promote sustainable transport, and integrate Thrace into upgraded international cross-border corridors.
Burhan formally asked the Transport Minister:
- What is the updated operational and technical plan of OSE for the full restoration of the Thessaloniki–Dedeağaç line to ensure reliable freight operations?
- Which immediate works (e.g., switch repairs, level crossing upgrades, station improvements at Okçular (Toxotes), İskeçe, and Gümülcine) can be completed in the coming months to safely support freight movements?
