Ministers present reconstruction projects for Evros in Orestiada

A government delegation, led by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, visited Evros on Thursday. During an event in Orestiada, ministers outlined the strategic projects their ministries are implementing for the reconstruction of the Evros region.

In particular, Infrastructure and Transport Minister Christos Staikouras emphasized that 50% of the eastern Alexandroupolis ring road will be completed by the end of 2024, with full completion by the end of 2025. Regarding the construction of a second bridge, 840 meters long, connecting Greece and Türkiye at the Kipi border station, he noted that procedures are progressing, with the project set to be tendered in 2025. He also stated that work is progressing on the railway connection between Alexandroupolis and Ormenio. Additionally, interventions at Alexandroupolis Airport are expected to be completed by the end of 2024.

Environment and Energy Minister Theodoros Skylakakis highlighted that 95% of the anti-erosion projects in Evros have been completed, with readiness to commence flood prevention works.

Culture Minister Lina Mendoni mentioned that cultural projects with a total budget of 40 million euros are being implemented across the entire Evros region.

Development Minister Takis Theodorikakos noted that all approved development plans in the Evros region will be funded with 36 million euros.

Agricultural Development Minister Kostas Tsiaras mentioned that 582 producers affected by the devastating 2023 wildfires in Evros have been compensated, while compensation for livestock farmers is ongoing.

Citizen Protection Minister Michalis Chrysochoidis referred to the recruitment of border guards, the installation of electronic surveillance systems, and the new outposts established, along with the fence, along the Greek-Turkish border following the March 2020 crisis.

Migration and Asylum Minister Nikos Panagiotopoulos stated, "Evros did not fall in 2020, and it will never fall," emphasizing that data shows a slight decrease in migration flows to Evros in the first half of 2024 compared to the same period in 2023.

Deputy Defence Minister Giannis Kefalogiannis announced that 233 military housing units will be constructed in the Evros region and mentioned Armed Forces programs aimed at improving the quality of life for Evros residents.

Minister of State Akis Skertsos pointed out that the government's goal is to reduce intra-regional inequalities, noting that the demographic issue is more significant in Evros than in other areas of Greece.

Deputy Minister to the Prime Minister Thanasis Kontogeorgis highlighted the symbolic significance of holding the event in Orestiada, underscoring the priority that Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis' government places on central and northern Evros.
