Minister Mendoni inspects restoration works at Çelebi Sultan Mehmet Mosque in Dimetoka
Greek Culture Minister Lina Mendoni visited the historic Çelebi Sultan Mehmet Mosque in Dimetoka to review ongoing restoration works.
According to a post on the Culture Ministry’s social media account, the €12.5 million restoration project is part of the ministry’s strategy to preserve and promote the cultural heritage of Thrace.
Speaking during the visit, Mendoni said:
“Culture is a form of defense, and no one understands this better than the people of Meriç living at the border. The project will be completed according to the Recovery and Resilience Fund’s schedule, although unexpected issues revealed during the works may delay completion to the first quarter of 2026. This is necessary to ensure the highest quality restoration.”
Mendoni also attended the presentation of the Dimetoka Castle restoration and promotion project at the Dimetoka Byzantine Museum, developed in cooperation between the Culture Ministry and Aristotle University of Selanik.
She noted:
“We had pledged to prepare a comprehensive management plan for Dimetoka Castle. Instead of isolated interventions, we created a plan that begins with historical and archaeological documentation and includes all necessary restoration steps to reintegrate the castle into the fabric of the city. The restoration of the castle is a long-term project requiring substantial resources.”
