Komotini to be the National Youth Capital in 2024
All the work done by the Municipality of Komotini for the city of Komotini to become the National Youth Capital in 2024 has yielded results. As a result of the evaluations, Komotini was awarded this title.
The ceremony to announce which city will be the National Youth Capital of Greece in 2024 was held on Monday 18 December 2023 at the Acropolis Museum in the capital Athens.
In 2024, Sofia Zaharaki, Minister of Social Cohesion and Family Sofia Zaharaki announced which city will be the capital city for young people. Minister Zaharaki announced that the Municipality of Komotini will be the National Youth Capital for 2024, as it meets and fulfils all the criteria required.
In addition to the Municipality of Komotini, the applications of the municipalities of Thermi, Larisaion, Neapolis Sykeon and Orestiada were also evaluated in order to become the 2024 National Youth Capital.
The Mayor of Komotini, Yannis Garanis, was present at the ceremony where the result was announced, together with the 4 mayors of the other candidate cities. In his statement about Komotini's winning the right to become the National Youth Capital 2024, he said the following;
"Our first term ends with very good news, as our city has been declared the National Youth Capital 2024. Thanks to the active and strong presence of the Democritus University of Thrace, as well as all the students, the young population, the dynamics of the city are known to the locals and at the same time indelibly engraved in the memory of every visitor. The young people, locals, students and workers of Komotini deserve this title. We will make every possible effort in cooperation with all youth-related institutions, such as the municipal Youth and Volunteering Centre (exagono) and the Youth Council, to carry out interventions that deserve this honourable title. We claim to win step by step together with our young people, including young people from different population groups as well as young people with disabilities in the programme".
