KKE: Fishermen in the Thracian Sea helpless due to mucilage outbreak

Members of Parliament from the Communist Party of Greece (KKE) have submitted a question to the Ministers of Rural Development & Food and Environment & Energy regarding the reappearance of mucilage (sea snot) in the Thracian Sea.
The MPs stated that since early February, the phenomenon has once again affected the area, damaging fishing equipment and causing fish to disappear, leaving only destruction and disappointment behind. While mucilage has appeared periodically in recent years, the MPs stressed that this year it is more intense.
They explained that the sticky substance (mucus) covers fishing nets and equipment, disrupting their function.
“As the fishermen have repeatedly stated, despite the recurrence of this phenomenon in 2020, 2021, and now in 2025, no steps have been taken so far to compensate the damages and the lost income of fishermen,” the MPs noted.
They added that the mucilage crisis adds to the existing challenges faced by fishermen, especially those arising from EU Common Fisheries Policy regulations, such as the implementation of the Ministerial Decision 65/23344/25-1-2024 regarding “euro-weighing.”
The KKE MPs asked the competent ministers what measures the government plans to take in regard to:
- Monitoring and controlling the mucilage phenomenon;
- Compensating fishermen for lost income and damage to their equipment.
