Journalist Mehmet Hatipoğlu laid to rest in Gümülcine
Gümülcine-born journalist and former Anadolu Agency (AA) correspondent Mehmet Hatipoğlu was laid to rest in his hometown of Gümülcine.
A farewell ceremony was held in front of his home in Celal Bayar neighborhood, where verses from the Qur’an were recited, prayers were offered, and condolences were extended.
Following the ceremony, Hatipoğlu’s funeral was taken to the Kahveci Cemetery, where he was buried after the afternoon prayer.
The funeral was attended by family members and relatives, İskeçe MP Burhan Baran, former Gümülcine MP Ahmet Hacıosman, Serdar Karapaça representing the Turkish Consulate General in Gümülcine, and many members of the Turkish minority community.
Born in 1955 in Gümülcine, Hatipoğlu worked for many years as a correspondent for Anadolu Agency’s Athens and Komotini offices. He authored numerous reports on the Turkish minority in Western Thrace and was also known as a cartoonist, having published a book in that field.
Having been in Istanbul for medical treatment, Hatipoğlu passed away at the age of 70. He is survived by his wife and two children.
The passing of Mehmet Hatipoğlu has caused deep sorrow among the Turkish community of Western Thrace.
