Increase in work accidents in Eastern Macedonia-Thrace Region

The latest data released by the Hellenic Statistical Institute confirm the upward trend in the number of accidents at work and fatalities due to accidents at work in the State of East Macedonia-Thrace, according to the latest survey on accidents at work published by the Hellenic Statistical Institute (ELSTAT) for the year 2022.
Increase in work accidents in Eastern Macedonia-Thrace Region

 The survey, which is based on the census, collects annual data on accidents at work and fatalities among workers. The survey aims to record the number of accidents related to workers (gender, age, occupation, etc.), workplaces and sectors of economic activity of workers, as well as the types of injuries, injured parts of the body, the type of injury to the employee and the causes of the injury. While all these data are recorded in numbers, the changes between 2021 and 2022 are also analysed.

Increase in occupational accidents in Eastern Macedonia-Thrace by 10.7% In Greece, occupational accidents in 2022 increased by 11.7% compared to 2021. In 2022, 3,453 men and 1,546 women were involved in a total of 4,999 accidents at work, compared to 3,136 men and 1,339 women in 4,475 accidents in 2021. As for fatal accidents at work, a total of 35 people died in 2022, 34 men and 1 woman. In 2021, the total number was 31, 30 men and 1 woman were victims of work accidents. The distribution of accidents by provinces shows that in 2022, the highest number of work accidents occurred in Attica (1,521), Central Macedonia (969) and Crete (462). In the province of East Macedonia-Thrace, 268 accidents at work were recorded in 2022, an increase of 10.7% compared to the previous year, when the number was 242. According to the same study, the regions with the fewest accidents at work were the North Aegean (53) and the Ionian Islands (93).

In the ranking of fatal accidents at work, Attica (8 accidents, all involving men), Central Macedonia and Thessaly (5 accidents, all involving men) and Central Greece (4 accidents, all involving men) are in the first places by province. In the province of East Macedonia-Thrace, we see that in the 2 fatal accidents at work recorded in 2022, the victims were men, while in 2021, 1 man died as a result of an accident at work.Finally, when comparing 2022 with 2021, it is noticeable that the largest increase in work accidents occurred in Epirus (47.3%), Attica (30.3%) and Thessaly (21.4%).
