Greece-Türkiye Railway Line revival discussed

The reopening of the Dedeağaç-Çirmen (Ormenio) railway line has come under discussion, with plans to reestablish the Greece-Türkiye railway connection.
Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, Vasilis Ikonomou, participated in a test journey of the reopened Dedeağaç-Çirmen railway line on Sunday, emphasizing the strategic importance of reconnecting the two countries by rail.
During the trip, Ikonomou inspected the Pythion Bridge to assess whether the infrastructure is ready for the resumption of cross-border railway services. Speaking to ERT, he outlined the government’s vision for the railway network in the region:
“The Dedeağaç-Kumçiftliği line is a national asset and will be further improved. In collaboration with relevant authorities and the Hellenic Railways Organization (OSE), we have devised a comprehensive plan to reopen and upgrade three key stations in Orestiada, Soufli, and Didimotycho.
With the dynamic reopening of this line, we send a clear message: the Evros region will not be left behind and will remain central to our national policies.”
The revival of this railway connection is expected to strengthen ties between Greece and Türkiye, enhance regional development, and improve transportation efficiency in the area.
