Google has officially announced a new Street View mapping cycle in Greece for 2026, with specially equipped vehicles already operating across large parts of the country, including Thrace. The initiative aims to update Google Maps data and provide enhanced 3D mapping, offering users more accurate and up-to-date visual information.

According to an official statement by Google LLC, vehicles marked “Google Street View” will conduct three-dimensional mapping from February 5 through November 24, 2026. The project covers almost the entire Greek territory, including Attica, Crete, Epirus, Macedonia and Thrace, the Peloponnese, Western Greece, the Ionian Islands, the Aegean Islands, Thessaly, and Central Greece.

Updating Google Maps and Street View Data

The primary goal of the operation is to refresh Google Maps and Street View imagery, ensuring that roads, neighborhoods, and public spaces reflect their current appearance. Advanced imaging equipment mounted on the vehicles allows for high-precision 3D visualization of streets and landmarks, improving navigation accuracy and professional mapping applications.

Privacy and Data Protection Measures

Google emphasized that privacy remains a top priority. Before any images are published, faces and vehicle license plates will be automatically blurred, preventing personal identification. Additionally, citizens have the right to request extra blurring, blur their residence, or even request data removal, in full compliance with Greek and European data protection regulations (GDPR).

Requests are reviewed within five working days, and Google clarified that raw data are not shared with third parties under any circumstances.

Benefits for Users and Professionals

The updated mapping is expected to significantly enhance the accuracy and relevance of Google Maps, benefiting everyday navigation, tourism, logistics, urban planning, and business use. For Street View users, this means newer images, wider coverage, and a more realistic digital representation of Greece’s regions.
