Former Deputy Governor criticizes MP İlhan Ahmet over minority stance
In an open letter shared on social media, Vidinli claimed that Ahmet has distanced himself from key minority issues and has failed to adequately represent the concerns of the community.
Criticism Over Past and Recent Actions
Vidinli referenced a 2004 incident involving the Western Thrace Turkish Minority Advisory Board, where it had been customary for a sitting MP to assume the chairmanship. According to Vidinli, İlhan Ahmet declined the role at the time, a decision that reportedly caused surprise among board members and the minority community.
He noted that following Ahmet’s refusal, the late Mufti İbrahim Şerif was elected chairman, while Vidinli and İsmail Rodoplu served as deputies.
Allegations on Minority Representation
The open letter also raised several contentious claims regarding Ahmet’s political conduct, including:
- Alleged involvement in the controversial “240 imams law”, which has been widely debated within the minority community
- Participation in the swearing-in ceremony of a state-appointed mufti in Didymoteicho, despite objections from segments of the minority
- Attendance at an iftar dinner hosted by the same mufti during Ramadan, which Vidinli criticized as politically insensitive
- Vidinli argued that such actions demonstrate a disconnect from the collective will and expectations of the Western Thrace Turkish Minority.
Expulsion Decision Referenced
The letter further recalled that Ahmet was expelled from the Advisory Board following a decision dated June 12, 2022, citing what was described as a departure from the minority’s political line.
Ongoing Debate Within Minority Politics
The criticism highlights ongoing divisions within minority politics in Western Thrace, particularly regarding representation, religious authority, and relations with the Greek state.
As of now, İlhan Ahmet has not publicly responded to the allegations outlined in the letter.
