First U.S. LNG Cargo for Bulgaria Arrives at Dedeağaç
The first U.S. liquefied natural gas (LNG) shipment destined for the Bulgarian market has arrived at the Dedeağaç (Alexandroupoli) floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) in northeastern Greece, energy company Metlen announced on Monday, calling it a landmark development.
In a statement, Metlen said the delivery underscores its role as a major private consumer and natural gas trader in the region, ensuring critical energy supply chains across the Balkans, from Bulgaria and Romania to neighboring markets.
The company said the shipment confirms its position as a key pillar of energy security in southeastern Europe and highlighted its long-standing cooperation with Bulgaria’s state gas supplier, Bulgargaz, describing it as one of the most stable cross-border energy partnerships in the region.
Panagiotis Kanellopoulos, Metlen’s chief executive director for International Energy Supply and Trading, said the arrival of the U.S.-sourced LNG cargo marks a significant milestone for the company. He noted that Metlen has played a leading role in LNG imports since 2010 and became the first company to import LNG via Greece’s Revithousa terminal and export it to Bulgaria in 2018.
Kanellopoulos added that the latest delivery further strengthens Metlen’s partnership with Bulgargaz and reinforces Greece’s role as an emerging regional energy hub, contributing to reliable and competitive LNG supplies across the Balkans.
