European Free Alliance prepared a video about the problems of Western Thrace Turks
In the video prepared to inform European parliamentarians and released on 19 May, it was emphasised that although the rights of the Turkish minority of approximately 150 thousand people living in Western Thrace were guaranteed by the Lausanne Peace Treaty, these rights were violated by the Greek state and nationalist groups.
In the video, it was stated that many properties belonging to Turks were confiscated in the 1980s in Western Thrace where discriminatory policies were followed, and it was also underlined that Turkish associations were banned.
In the video, the death of Dr Sadık Ahmet, the late founder of the FEP Party who fought for the rights of the Turkish minority, in a suspicious traffic accident on the anniversary of the Treaty of Lausanne was reminded.
"Today, it is forbidden for the Turkish minority to even describe itself as Turkish. However, the minority has a high awareness of Turkishness. In the 2019 European Parliament (EP) elections, the FEP Party won a great victory in the region and became the first party in Komotini and Xanthi."
In the European Parliament (EP) elections held on 26 May 2019, the FEP Party became the first party in the provinces of Rodopi and Xanthi with the support of a large part of the Turkish voters, as in the EP elections in 2014, which it participated for the first time.
