EMT invests in road safety: More than 5,000 participants in awareness and prevention activities

The “Road Safety Weeks” organized by the Region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace (EMT) in the regional units of Meriç, Drama, İskeçe, and Kavala concluded with strong participation from students and citizens. The events ran from 29 September to 31 October 2025 and focused on both theoretical and hands-on training.

Activities took place in specially designed venues across the region, aiming to educate and raise awareness among students and the general public on Road Safety and Sustainable Mobility.

The initiative consisted of two main pillars:

• Theoretical training:
Sessions for students of all school levels, featuring presentations, discussions, videos, and age-appropriate interactive communication.

• Experiential training:
Hands-on activities using specialized equipment such as vehicle crash simulators, impairment-simulation goggles, cones, bicycles, electric scooters, and other practical training tools.

The actions were supported by new equipment acquired through the project “Procurement of equipment for the promotion and advancement of Road Safety,” implemented by the General Directorate of Transport and Communications. Six crash simulators, simulation goggles, bicycles, scooters, and other tools are now available to all regional transport directorates, enabling similar initiatives in the future.

A total of 4,432 primary and secondary school students and 600 citizens, parents, and students took part.

Local and regional bodies played a crucial role in delivering the program, including Traffic Police, Fire Brigade, National First Aid Centre (EKAB), Civil Protection, driving schools, the Red Cross, KAPI İskeçe, the İskeçe Medical Association, the “ASPIDAS” sports club, and the Hellenic Rescue Team (Meriç branch).

The response from the educational community was particularly positive. Cooperation with education directorates, schools, and teachers was described as “excellent,” with many expressing a strong desire for the initiative to continue in future years. Students themselves showed high levels of interest and engagement, underscoring the initiative’s educational value and social impact.

The activities were supported by the Deputy Regional Governors of Evros Evangelos Poulilios, Drama Michalis Mourvetidis, İskeçe Polyxeni Brika, and Kavala Theodoros Markopoulos, as well as by Stelios Katsogridakis, Special Advisor for Education and Youth.

Regional Governor Christodoulos Topsidis stated:

Road Safety is not an obligation—it is an investment in life and in the future of our children. We are especially pleased to see how warmly the ‘Road Safety Weeks’ were embraced by students, parents, teachers, and institutions across our Region.

The large participation, the enthusiasm of the children, and the excellent cooperation of all involved show the path we must continue: more education, more prevention, more safety.

EMT will continue to invest in actions that save lives and cultivate responsible and informed citizens of tomorrow. I warmly thank everyone who contributed to this effort.”
