High wildfire risk alert issued for Gümülcine region on Friday
A high wildfire risk alert has been issued for the Rodopi region for Friday, July 31, according to the Forest Fire Risk Forecast Map released by the General Secretariat for Civil Protection under Greece’s Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection.
Authorities classified the region under Risk Category 3, warning that high temperatures, local winds and terrain conditions could contribute to the outbreak of multiple wildfires, some of which may be difficult to contain.
The General Secretariat for Civil Protection urged residents and visitors to exercise extreme caution and avoid activities that could potentially trigger fires through negligence.
Authorities advised the public to avoid:
- Burning dry grass, branches or garden waste,
- Using equipment that may create sparks, such as grinders or welding tools,
- Lighting barbecues in open areas,
- Using smoke during beekeeping activities,
- Throwing cigarette butts into natural areas.
Officials also reminded residents that burning crop residues and similar agricultural materials remains prohibited during the wildfire season.
Citizens who notice a fire have been urged to immediately contact the Fire Service at 199 or the emergency number 112, providing clear information about their location and the area where the fire was detected.
FOREST ACCESS RESTRICTIONS
A decision by the Deputy Regional Governor responsible for Rodopi has temporarily banned access by people and vehicles to certain forest areas, with exceptions defined under Article 130 of Law 4926/2022.
The restricted areas include:
- The Yanıköy (Nimfea) Forest within the municipality of Gümülcine,
- Forested areas in the Meşe coastal region under the municipality of Gümülcine.
The restrictions do not apply to residents and workers who need to travel between their homes and workplaces, or to citizens using the road network.
Authorities called on residents to follow safety measures and remain highly vigilant in forested areas as wildfire risks continue.
