Eastern Macedonia and Thrace transition takes center stage at ENA Institute Forum in Gümülcine

Gümülcine will host a major regional policy forum on May 20, 2026, as the Eastern Macedonia and Thrace branch of the ENA Institute for Alternative Policies organizes a full-day conference focused on demographic sustainability, productive reconstruction, and regional political strategy.

The event, titled “Eastern Macedonia and Thrace in Transition: Productive Reconstruction, Social Cohesion and Demographic Sustainability,” will take place at the Gümülcine Concert Hall from 12:00 to 19:00 local time.

According to organizers, the conference aims to deepen public dialogue around the future of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace (EMT), a strategically significant region facing demographic decline, economic restructuring challenges, and growing demands for sustainable regional development policies.

Focus on Demographics, Economy and Political Strategy
The conference program is structured around three central thematic panels:

Demographics and Society – examining who will live in the region over the next decade and under what social and economic conditions.
Productive Model and Development – exploring sustainable economic transformation and regional production strategies.
Political Strategy and Governance – discussing how policy planning can translate regional data into actionable governance frameworks.
The forum will bring together politicians, academics, local government representatives, civil society actors, economists, engineers, and business stakeholders from across the region.

Among the featured speakers are former Greek ministers Efstathios Giannakidis, Sokratis Xynidis, and Alexis Charitsis, alongside researchers and policy experts from institutions including Democritus University of Thrace and Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.

Public Dialogue and Livestream Coverage
In addition to panel discussions, the event will feature networking sessions, policy exchange forums, and a parallel public dialogue segment titled “Policy Snapshots: Eastern Macedonia and Thrace in Transition – The Next Day.”

Journalist Natassa Vafeiadou will moderate short interviews and public interventions involving citizens, local stakeholders, and representatives of civil society organizations from across the region.

Organizers say the initiative seeks to create a “living space for public dialogue and political expression” focused on the future trajectory of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace.

The conference will also be livestreamed via the official YouTube channel of the ENA Institute.

Why the Forum Matters
Eastern Macedonia and Thrace remains one of Greece’s most geopolitically sensitive and economically complex regions, balancing demographic pressures, cross-border dynamics, rural depopulation, industrial transition, and infrastructure development.

The conference reflects growing interest among policymakers and regional actors in creating long-term strategies that combine economic resilience with social cohesion and demographic sustainability.
