Eastern Macedonia and Thrace joins European Alliance for water resilience and climate preparedness
Regional Governor Christodoulos Topsidis signed the declaration establishing the Alliance of European Regions for Water Resilience and Climate Change Preparedness during a ceremony held in Brussels on Tuesday.
The signing took place in the presence of Kata Tüttő, President of the European Committee of the Regions.
Network of 18 European Regions
With the participation of representatives from 17 additional European regions, the initiative establishes a collaborative network designed to strengthen the role of regional authorities in the European policy debate on:
- Sustainable water management
- Climate change adaptation
- Regional resilience to extreme weather events
The alliance aims to facilitate knowledge sharing, policy coordination, and the exchange of best practices among European regions facing increasing climate-related challenges.
Tackling Floods, Droughts and Climate Risks
Through the new platform, participating regions will collaborate on joint initiatives focused on:
- Sustainable water resource management
- Flood prevention and mitigation strategies
- Drought preparedness
- Climate adaptation planning
- Improving regional readiness for extreme weather conditions
The initiative reflects a growing recognition across Europe that regional governments play a critical role in climate adaptation policies, particularly in areas vulnerable to water stress and environmental change.
Strengthening Regional Cooperation
According to Topsidis, participation in the alliance opens new opportunities for Eastern Macedonia and Thrace.
“Joining this alliance creates new possibilities for cooperation, access to knowledge, and the utilization of European tools and funding resources,” he said.
“These opportunities can strengthen the resilience of our region and support sustainable solutions for the future of water resources and local communities.”
By joining the alliance, the region aims to enhance its capacity to address environmental challenges while contributing to broader European efforts to build climate-resilient regions and sustainable water governance systems.
