This project, long requested by local farmers, aims to significantly benefit the region's agricultural sector.

The Rodopi Regional Vice-Governor, Emmanuil Tapacas, along with Deputy Governor Efkarpidis Nikolaos, Digital Transformation Advisor Rıdvan Molla İsa, Regional Council Member Ahmet Osman Pehlivan, and officials from the Rodopi Technical Affairs Department, visited the site today to assess the progress of the work.

Constructed in the 1980s alongside the Otmanlı Dam, Cambaz Dam primarily serves irrigation for the surrounding agricultural lands. However, over the years, sediment buildup has reduced its water storage capacity and irrigation efficiency.

Tapacas emphasized the importance of agriculture to the region’s development, stating that "Agriculture is a pillar of our region’s growth, and this project is a top priority for Regional Governor Hristodulos Topsidis."

The project involves removing sediment from a 204-acre water basin, with a focus on environmental sustainability, as part of the dam lies within the East Macedonia and Thrace National Park and is a designated NATURA 2000 site.

Given the challenges posed by climate change, such projects are crucial for future water resource management, especially as irrigation demands rise and water supplies become more scarce.

The extracted materials will be repurposed for rehabilitating degraded areas or enhancing local agricultural lands. The project, managed by Tassopoulos Hristos & Partners, has a budget of €161,296.88, and similar work is planned for the Sendelli Dam.
