Concerns raised over planned closure of OSE maintenance unit in Drama
Reactions are mounting over the planned closure of the Hellenic Railways Organization (OSE) Network Maintenance Unit in Drama, with SYRIZA MP and Interior Spokesperson Theofilos Xanthopoulos warning of serious safety risks and the impact on employees’ lives.
Xanthopoulos said the unit, staffed by five specialized technicians, is being disbanded, leaving only two technical teams in Dedeağaç (Alexandroupoli) and Selanik (Thessaloniki) responsible for maintaining the railway line from Çirmen (Ormenio) to Thessaloniki. He argued that this makes proper monitoring of the infrastructure practically impossible and could pose significant dangers in the event of an accident.
The MP also raised concerns about the social impact on workers, who would have to relocate, and criticized the silence of local authorities. He pledged to continue efforts to overturn the decision.
OSE: Drama Railway Station will not close
OSE, for its part, denied reports that the Drama Railway Station would be closed, saying the media coverage is based on a “misinterpretation of an internal draft organizational chart.”
In an official statement, the railway operator said network maintenance in Eastern Macedonia and Thrace will continue normally, and that the establishment of Regional Centers is a purely operational reorganization, which does not eliminate positions or affect the functioning of stations.
