Changes in Greek-Bulgarian border crossings from January 1

From January 1, 2025, significant changes will occur at the Greek-Bulgarian borders due to Bulgaria's integration into the Schengen Zone. The removal of border controls, approved by the EU Council of Interior Ministers, aims to enhance freedom of movement between member states. However, procedures will vary based on the specific border crossing and regional circumstances.

At the Komotini (Nymfaia) - Makaza checkpoint, barriers will be lifted, and identity checks by police will cease. Temporary police patrols from both countries may monitor the area initially. Despite these changes, Bulgaria's restriction on buses and large trucks crossing into Greece will remain, highlighting ongoing bilateral discussions.

For the Northern Evros (Ormenio) checkpoint, the situation remains unclear. Customs authorities indicate that changes will focus on passport controls, leaving other checks for goods and vehicles intact. However, no official statement has been issued by the police, leaving local stakeholders awaiting clarification.

More details are expected as January approaches, but uncertainty persists regarding specific implementations at certain checkpoints.
