Burhan Baran comments on Greece’s bill on non-performing loans
Independent MP Burhan Baran has issued a statement on Greece’s parliamentary vote on legislation concerning non-performing loans, highlighting the need to protect primary residences while maintaining a balance between supporting financially vulnerable borrowers and ensuring the repayment of debt obligations.
In his statement dated 6 November, Burhan said the parliamentary debate had once again brought the protection of primary residences to the forefront, describing it as a fundamental pillar of social cohesion and a prerequisite for economic recovery.
“Protecting the primary residence is not a concession. It is a cornerstone of social cohesion and a prerequisite for economic recovery,” Burhan said.
DISTINGUISHING VULNERABLE BORROWERS FROM STRATEGIC DEFAULTERS
Referring to the economic difficulties experienced over the past 15 years, Burhan stressed the importance of distinguishing between strategic defaulters and citizens who are genuinely unable to meet their financial obligations due to economic hardship.
He argued that the state must strike a balance between protecting vulnerable households and ensuring that borrowers fulfil their loan repayment commitments.
According to Burhan, failing to maintain this balance could lead to moral hazard on one hand and social injustice on the other.
BURHAN: MY VOTES WILL BE BASED ON SUBSTANCE
The independent MP also emphasised that demanding financial responsibility from citizens should not go hand in hand with imposing unsustainable financial burdens on them.
Concluding his statement, Burhan said he would continue to approach such issues with an emphasis on substantive decisions rather than political appearances.
“My votes will be based on substance, not appearances,” he stated.
