Anti-War Rally scheduled this Sunday in Dedeağaç

The Alexandroupoli (Dedeağaç) Peace Committee, along with various labor unions and civil society organizations, has called on citizens to participate in an anti-war rally this Sunday, citing recent developments in the Middle East and Greece’s involvement in overseas military operations.

The joint statement condemned the escalation of Greece’s military participation abroad, arguing that it increases regional tensions and raises the risk of a broader conflict.

According to the organizers, the recent developments in the Middle East make it imperative for Greece to withdraw from war activities. Instead, the government has reportedly expanded the country’s military presence by deploying troops to Saudi Arabia and the Red Sea, sending frigates and fighter jets to Cyprus, and positioning Greece as an active participant in regional hostilities.

The statement also claimed that Greece’s actions primarily serve the strategic interests of the U.S., NATO, and the EU, rather than national security, and highlighted the use of military infrastructure from the Suda base in Crete to Alexandroupoli and Larissa for these operations.

Organizers warned of the economic consequences of potential conflict, noting that energy, fuel, and food prices could rise, further burdening citizens’ cost of living, while state resources continue to fund military operations instead of domestic priorities such as healthcare, education, and flood protection projects.

Rally demands

The anti-war rally calls for:

Closure of the NATO base in Alexandroupoli and all foreign military bases and facilities across Greece

Immediate withdrawal of Greek Patriot missile units from Saudi Arabia

Return of all Greek frigates and fighter jets stationed abroad

No participation or logistical support for imperialist wars

The rally is scheduled for Sunday, March 15, at 12:30 p.m. at Akademias Park in Alexandroupoli (Dedeağaç).

Organizers emphasized, “Alexandroupoli should be a harbor for the people, not a military base or a target for retaliation.”
