The fire disaster that occurred in Alexandroupoli in recent days is becoming more and more sad with each passing day. According to the statement made by the fire brigade authorities in Lefkimmi, the number of people who lost their lives in the fire has risen to 19. According to ERT, fire brigades in the area are still carrying out an ongoing operation to remove a body from the scene.

On Tuesday (22/8), during an investigation in the Avanta area, the burnt bodies of 18 migrants were found in a shack. After a macroscopic examination carried out by Alexandroupoli Prosecutor Pavlos Pavlidis, the cause of death was determined to be complete combustion. "Their deaths were quick, they were hit by the heat wave and we can assume that they were not in pain," Prosecutor Pavlidis said in a statement.

Investigations into the incident revealed that the victims were aged under 35. Except for two children, the rest of the victims were young. In this context, it was also stated that studies to determine the identities of those who lost their lives were also initiated. Samples taken from the bodies will be used to assist in the identification process.

While the effects of the fire and the lives lost continue to cause deep sorrow among the people in the region, it was reported that the investigation into the details of the incident continues. Authorities stated that the cause of the fire and possible negligence are being investigated.
