Alexandroupolis power plant: Natural gas station to be operational in 2025
The Alexandroupolis Power Plant project, a joint venture between PPC (Public Power Corporation) and DEPA Commerce, is progressing on schedule. The station, with a capacity of 840 MW and an efficiency rate of 63%, is expected to begin operations by late 2025.
Key Features of the Project:
Strategic Location: Situated in the Alexandroupolis Industrial Zone, it connects directly to the Alexandroupolis FSRU and is near the Greece-Bulgaria IGB pipeline.
Export Potential: The plant will have the capability to export electricity to neighboring countries such as Bulgaria, North Macedonia, and Serbia.
Investment Scale: With a budget of €400 million, construction began in February 2023.
Technological Advancements:
The facility will utilize a General Electric gas turbine (571 MW) and a steam turbine (269 MW) connected to a state-of-the-art generator. It also supports mixed fuel, including up to 50% hydrogen, positioning it among Europe’s first plants capable of combining natural gas with green hydrogen.
Regional Impact:
Thrace's Energy Hub: Together with the Komotini plant, operational by Q1 2025, the region will establish a robust energy ecosystem with cutting-edge natural gas facilities.
Carbon Reduction: The plant's high efficiency ensures lower fuel consumption and reduced carbon emissions.
The station will connect to the Hellenic Transmission System Operator (ADMIE) Ultra-High Voltage Center in Nea Santa, enhancing Greece-Bulgaria energy interconnections and bolstering cross-border electricity flow.
This project signifies a major step in Greece's transition to cleaner and more efficient energy production.
