ABTTF President criticizes Spartakos List proposal to ban Turkish language and headscarves at Gümülcine Hospital

The President of the Federation of Western Thrace Turks in Europe (ABTTF), Halit Habipoğlu, strongly criticized a proposal by the Spartakos List in the municipality of Komotini that reportedly called for banning the Turkish language and headscarves at the Gümülcine State Hospital.

“A Provocative Move Against Social Harmony”

In a statement released on March 9, Habipoğlu described the proposal as a provocative initiative that threatens social peace in Western Thrace.

According to Habipoğlu, the letter sent by the Spartakos List reflects an approach that ignores the language, culture, and religious beliefs of the Western Thrace Turkish minority.

“Speaking Turkish Is a Fundamental Right”

Habipoğlu emphasized that Western Thrace Turks make up a significant portion of the population in the Rodopi region, and many healthcare workers of Turkish origin serve at Gümülcine State Hospital.

He stressed that Turkish-speaking staff communicating in their native language among themselves is a basic human right, rejecting claims that such practice disrupts the hospital’s institutional functioning.

Criticism of Proposed Headscarf Ban

Habipoğlu also condemned the call to prohibit headscarves, stating that everyone has the right to dress according to their religious beliefs under Greece’s constitution and laws.

He argued that implementing such a restriction would represent a clear violation of freedom of religion and conscience.

Call to Protect Social Peace

Habipoğlu concluded by stating that initiatives targeting the identity, language, and religious beliefs of the Western Thrace Turkish community are unacceptable.

He added that he believes the hospital administration will respond appropriately and contribute to preserving social harmony in the region.
