ABTTF calls for bilingual kindergartens on International Mother Language Day

The European Federation of Western Thrace Turks (European Federation of Western Thrace Turks) has renewed its call for bilingual education, marking International Mother Language Day with a written statement emphasizing the importance of Turkish–Greek bilingual kindergartens in Western Thrace.

In its announcement, ABTTF highlighted the long-standing demand of the Turkish minority community for early-age education that preserves linguistic and cultural identity. The federation described mother-tongue education as a fundamental human right and called on authorities in Greece to address discriminatory practices that limit access to such schooling opportunities.

Key Messages from ABTTF

The Turkish minority in Western Thrace continues to demand the establishment of Turkish–Greek bilingual kindergartens to ensure children can learn in both languages.

ABTTF President Halit Habipoğlu criticized what the federation calls “anti-democratic and discriminatory” policies that hinder equal educational opportunities for the community.

The statement noted that despite significant Turkish-speaking populations in both the Rhodope and İskeçe regions, state-run bilingual early education options remain virtually nonexistent.

Context: International Mother Language Day

Observed globally on February 21, International Mother Language Day promotes linguistic diversity and multilingual education. UNESCO reports that nearly 40 % of the world’s population lacks access to education in their native language — underscoring the relevance of ABTTF’s appeal.

The federation’s call adds to broader debates about minority education rights and cultural preservation within Europe, particularly in regions with diverse linguistic communities.
