Greek Media: Türkiye developing ‘own Tomahawk’ with GEZGIN cruise missile
Greek media are closely tracking developments in Türkiye’s defence industry, with Athens-based outlet Defence Point reporting that Ankara is pressing ahead with the development of its domestically produced GEZGIN cruise missile.
According to turkiyetoday, in a report titled “Türkiye Is Developing Its Own Tomahawk Missile,” Defence Point compared GEZGIN to the U.S.-made Tomahawk, noting that the Turkish missile is being designed for launch from land-based platforms, warships and submarines.
According to the report, GEZGIN is intended to deliver high-precision strikes and is expected to play a key role in strengthening Türkiye’s strategic autonomy. Analysts cited by the outlet said the system could significantly enhance the country’s long-range strike capability and alter regional power balances.
While the missile’s official range has not been disclosed, Defence Point cited estimates suggesting it exceeds 1,000 kilometres, with some assessments placing it between 1,400 and 1,600 kilometres. The missile’s precision-strike capability from long distances was highlighted as a factor that could bolster Türkiye’s regional deterrence.
The report said multiple tests of the GEZGIN cruise missile have already been completed successfully, including encapsulated test launches conducted at Aksaz using the Submarine Test Infrastructure (DATA). Integration with the MIDLAS National Vertical Launch System is ongoing, while the missile is planned for deployment across land, air, naval and submarine platforms.
Key features cited include advanced guidance systems for high accuracy, low-altitude terrain-following flight, a fully domestic infrastructure aimed at reducing foreign dependency, and long-range strike capability.
Defence Point concluded that the GEZGIN programme underscores Türkiye’s emphasis on indigenous production and technological independence in the defence sector.
