US-Iran tensions surge after Strait of Hormuz clashes
Tensions between the United States and Iran escalated again on Thursday after both sides exchanged strikes near the Strait of Hormuz despite ongoing diplomatic efforts and a ceasefire announcement.
The US Central Command (CENTCOM) said Iranian forces launched missiles, drones and small boats at three US Navy destroyers transiting the Strait of Hormuz, adding that no US assets were hit. CENTCOM said US forces intercepted the attacks and carried out “self-defense strikes” targeting Iranian missile and drone launch sites, command centers and surveillance facilities.
US President Donald Trump said the destroyers passed through the strategic waterway “under fire” but suffered no damage, while Iranian attackers and small boats were “completely destroyed.” He added the vessels would rejoin a US naval blockade in the area.
Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) confirmed launching missile and drone attacks on US destroyers, saying the operation was in response to what Tehran described as a US ceasefire violation, including strikes on an Iranian oil tanker near Jask port and attacks on civilian areas in southern Iran.
Iranian officials claimed the attacks caused “significant damage” to US vessels and forced them to retreat toward the Gulf of Oman, though Washington denied any losses.
Meanwhile, the United Arab Emirates said its air defense systems were responding to a “missile threat” and urged residents to remain in safe locations and follow official updates.
Despite the clashes, Trump said the ceasefire with Iran remained in effect and suggested a broader agreement with Tehran could be reached soon, while reiterating that Iran “cannot have a nuclear weapon.”
