A traditional Greek Orthodox liturgy held on the island of Bozcaada on July 26, as part of the Feast of Saint Paraskevi, drew attention not only for its religious significance but also for its political undertones.

The annual ceremony, conducted at the Ayazma Monastery and led by Greek Patriarch Bartholomew, was attended by Orthodox Christians from Greece and other countries. However, the participation of PASOK leader Nikos Androulakis sparked controversy, particularly among members of the Turkish Minority in Western Thrace.

Androulakis, known for his critical stance toward the Turkish Muslim Minority in Greece, has also been criticized in Turkey for statements perceived as supportive of individuals associated with the Fethullah Gülen movement (FETÖ) — a group Ankara designates as a terrorist organization responsible for the 2016 coup attempt.

In addition to Androulakis, the event was attended by Greek Consul General in Istanbul Konstantinos Koutras, Metropolitan Kirillos of Gökçeada and Bozcaada, and numerous Orthodox clergy from abroad. The liturgy attracted a large turnout in the Ayazma area, reinforcing the event’s symbolic significance.

Reactions from the Western Thrace Turkish Minority
Androulakis’s presence in Bozcaada drew sharp criticism from Turkish Minority representatives in Western Thrace, who accused the Greek political establishment of double standards in matters of religious freedom.

Community leaders pointed out the Greek government’s refusal to recognize elected muftis and ongoing restrictions on religious autonomy in Western Thrace, contrasting them with high-profile Greek participation in religious ceremonies held in Türkiye. Some labeled this contrast as "hypocrisy," arguing that intervention in Turkish domestic affairs on minority issues is inconsistent with Greece’s own minority policies.

“This kind of visibility by Greek politicians masks a deeper contradiction between their domestic policies and international appearances,” said a minority representative speaking on condition of anonymity.
