Winter sales: Until when they will last

The winter sales will last until the end of February with traders expecting that this year's turnover for the two months will exceed the 6 billion euros of the same period last year.

Following the positive sign of the festive season that has just ended, the trading world expects that the lower prices of products on the shelves during the winter discount period will attract consumers and they, despite the pressure on their disposable income, will make purchases in order to meet their needs.

The winter sales will last until the end of February, with shops also operating on Sundays 14 and 21 January 2024 on a voluntary basis.

How the discounts are calculated
At the same time, intensive and continuous checks are expected from the competent bodies of the Ministry of Development in the market, in order to avoid misleading discounts and the possibility of deceiving consumers.

It is noted that according to the legislation in force from the beginning of 2023 any announcement of price reduction, should be made on the lowest price of the previous 30 days.

Those who violate the provisions on discounts and reduced prices will be fined an amount equal to 1% of annual turnover and in any case not less than 10,000 euros. If the discounts are found to be inaccurate or misleading, a fine equal to 2% of annual turnover and in any case not less than EUR 20,000 shall be imposed.
