Unpaid road tax: Notices for 2020 debts to be sent ahead of expiration deadline
The Independent Authority for Public Revenue (AADE) will begin sending notices this month to vehicle owners who failed to pay their 2020 road tax, as these debts are set to expire at the end of 2025.
According to the AADE decision, thousands of emails will be sent in the second half of September, alerting taxpayers of their obligations. Vehicle owners identified through cross-checks with their tax returns (E1 forms) will be able to review and correct errors in their vehicle records via the myCAR platform throughout October.
From November 1, objections can be submitted through the “My Requests” application, where owners must upload supporting documents. However, filing an objection will not suspend the process—meaning fines may still be imposed before appeals are reviewed.
If no exemption is confirmed after reviewing the documents, the 2020 road tax plus penalties (double the original fee) will be formally assessed by December 5. Authorities will complete corrections by November 28, with fines to follow in early December.
Exemptions apply to:
- Vehicles owned by persons with disabilities,
- Vehicles registered to deceased individuals.
Even after debts are assessed, owners can later submit documentation to have the charges cancelled. The official assessments may also be challenged in administrative courts.
