Tomb of the unknown soldier under 24-hour police guard
The decision follows recent incidents and public gatherings near the monument that reignited debate over appropriate conduct at the site.
According to information reported by Kathimerini, the plan details a series of police measures to be implemented as needed under newly enacted legislation. Its primary goal is to prevent unlawful or disrespectful behaviour that could undermine the monument’s prestige.
The measures include 24-hour foot patrols, visible policing, and the deployment of additional security units to monitor the site and identify suspicious activity. A designated police officer will act as a liaison between the public and law enforcement, ensuring effective communication and rapid response to any incidents.
In cases of public gatherings or unexpected events requiring heightened vigilance, a team of 20 uniformed officers equipped with full operational gear will serve as first responders.
Police leadership stated that the plan is being implemented “with consistency and responsibility,” underscoring the government’s commitment to maintaining both order and respect for the national monument.
“The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is sacred, and rallies or demonstrations in the area will not be permitted,” government spokesman Pavlos Marinakis said on Wednesday.
Referring to the recent legislative amendment governing conduct at the site, Marinakis added, “No smoking or guitar playing at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier will be allowed.”
“The police will enforce the law. Unfortunately, for this to happen, the amendment was necessary, because we were not all on the same page,” he said.
The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, guarded continuously by the Presidential Guard (Evzones), is one of Greece’s most significant national memorials, dedicated to the fallen of all wars.
