The island of Thassos-Kavala welcomed more than 1.5 million visitors during the summer months, marking a notable increase compared to last year, according to official data from the Central Port Authority of Kavala.

From June to August, an additional 100,000 tourists travelled to the island compared to the same period in 2023, confirming Thassos’ position as one of Greece’s most popular holiday destinations.

Figures show that 1,424,019 passengers reached Thassos via the port of Keramoti, up from 1,355,807 the previous year. Vehicle traffic also recorded a rise: trucks increased from 43,539 to 44,621, private cars from 348,326 to 369,849, and motorcycles from 10,236 to 11,242.

According to AMNA on the Kavala–Prinos ferry line, a slight decline was noted, with 112,947 passengers this year compared to 116,427 last summer. Authorities attribute the drop to fewer daily routes and longer travel times, as the journey from Kavala lasts about 90 minutes, compared to 40 minutes from Keramoti.

Overall, Thassos showed the strongest growth in tourist arrivals among northeastern Aegean islands. The island’s accessibility, family-friendly atmosphere, and wide range of accommodations make it an attractive choice for both extended stays and short breaks.

Tourism officials highlight that Thassos remains especially popular with visitors from Romania and Bulgaria, who benefit from quick and easy travel via the Egnatia Odos highway. Travel agencies in both countries frequently promote the destination with the slogan that “within six hours, you can be swimming on some of the most beautiful beaches in Greece.”

Beyond its regional visitors, the island also draws steady interest from Northern European travellers, including Germans, British, Dutch, and Swedes, who often arrive through organised tour packages.

With rising numbers and growing international appeal, Thassos continues to strengthen its reputation as one of Greece’s leading summer destinations.
