SYRIZA leader criticizes PASOK, New Left for avoiding cooperation

Leftist SYRIZA leader Sokratis Famellos on Tuesday said that center-left PASOK and the New Left parties were “failing to rise to the occasion,” as the two opposition parties appeared reluctant to cooperate more closely with the party against the ruling Conservatives.
Speaking to Mega TV, Famellos said that the majority of Greeks want the parties to reach an agreement so there are solutions against the New Democracy government. “SYRIZA took an initiative and we said we are ready to discuss, we presented a package of 10+1 proposals but PASOK and New Left did not rise to the occasion, there was a refusal or delay in mounting a progressive response,” he said.
As Kathimerini has reported, New Left, the formation that came from a split from then-main opposition SYRIZA at the end of 2023, has been sharply split over the question of a rapprochement.
Over the weekend, the party’s central committee, while affirming the desire for a broad “progressive front” against the ruling conservatives, rejected the idea of aligning solely with SYRIZA, even temporarily: 80 central committee members voted against, 57 for and six cast blank ballots.
