A 44-year-old man who has confessed to the fatal shooting of a 50-year-old village head in western Greece is being brought before a prosecutor on Monday, as police maintain heightened security in the area amid fears of reprisals.

The victim, the community leader of Lithovouni, was found shot dead inside his car in a rural area of Makryneia. The suspect told investigators he acted first out of fear, claiming the victim had aimed a weapon at him. “I stopped him. If I hadn’t, he would have killed me,” he said, according to police sources.

Authorities say the motive appears to be a long-running personal dispute linked to a romantic rivalry involving the victim’s wife. The suspect reportedly told police the woman had previously been in a relationship with him before reconciling with her husband.

Local residents described the two men as former friends and business associates whose relationship had deteriorated over the past year. Witnesses said the incident followed a brief pursuit by car after the men encountered each other earlier in the village.

The investigation is ongoing.
