The Greek Supreme Court (Arios Pagos) has called for a comprehensive investigation into illegal drilling activities and water shortages across the country. In response to growing water issues exacerbated by climate change, the court has demanded the identification of illegal drilling operations and the initiation of criminal proceedings where necessary.
A written directive emphasized concerns about rapidly depleting water resources, especially on the islands, where demand for water has surged. The directive stated, "The misuse and careless exploitation of water resources has led to an increase in illegal drilling for irrigation purposes. It is therefore crucial for the relevant authorities to take necessary measures."
Highlighting the severity of the environmental crisis, the Supreme Court stressed the need for authorities to intervene and control illegal drilling to safeguard the nation's water supply.
