The first "smart" traffic camera capable of automatically issuing fines is being installed at the busy intersection of Panepistimiou and Vasilissis Sofias in central Athens.

Unlike traditional traffic cameras, this new generation of smart cameras not only records violations but is also equipped with technology to automatically fine motorists who exceed speed limits or run red lights.

Authorities plan to install a total of 2,000 smart cameras across the capital, focusing on areas known for frequent traffic violations and accidents. Key locations include the intersections of Kifissias Avenue with Ethnikis Antistaseos and Mesogeion Avenue with Halandriou.

The move comes in response to alarming traffic statistics. In June alone, Athens police recorded 38,567 traffic violations and reported 13 fatalities on the city's roads.

Officials hope the new system will serve as a deterrent and improve road safety throughout the city.
