Greek authorities are investigating the deaths of eight inmates over a 65-day period at Agios Stefanos prison in Patra, amid concerns over conditions inside the facility.

The deaths began on April 2 when a 31-year-old prisoner was found dead in his cell. Additional fatalities were recorded through April, May and June, involving inmates aged between 38 and 72.

Prosecutors have ordered a swift investigation, while toxicology tests are pending. Authorities have so far ruled out criminal activity.

Overcrowding and healthcare concerns

Officials are examining possible factors behind the deaths, including underlying health conditions and drug use inside the prison.

Police recently arrested 13 inmates on drug possession charges, while prison staff continue daily searches for narcotics.

The facility, designed to hold 446 inmates, housed 677 prisoners last week, according to official data. Staffing shortages have also been reported, with 96 guards currently serving against 118 authorized positions.

Questions over prison conditions

Correctional officers have highlighted severe overcrowding, while legal and medical groups have raised concerns about limited medical and psychiatric care.

Authorities said repeated requests for additional psychiatric staff have not been met.

The Justice Ministry has attributed rising prison populations nationwide to sentencing changes and said expanded use of electronic monitoring could help ease overcrowding in the future.
