Poll shows public discontent with government, justice system

A new MRB poll presented on Open TV reveals growing public dissatisfaction with the government’s handling of justice-related issues, particularly the Panos Ruci hunger strike case and the OPEKEPE farming subsidy scandal.

Nearly half of respondents (49.9%) rated the justice system's response to the Ruci case negatively. Ruci, the father of a Tempe train disaster victim, staged a 23-day hunger strike demanding permission to exhume his son’s remains. Just 42.3% viewed the handling of the case positively.

Broader trust in the judiciary remains low, with 72.2% saying they do not believe the courts can ensure justice in major public interest cases. The same percentage expressed skepticism that those implicated in the OPEKEPE subsidy scandal would be held accountable or return the funds.

Government decisions on public demonstrations also drew criticism. While 59% supported recent protests near the Monument to the Unknown Soldier, 56.6% opposed the government’s move to place the monument under defense ministry protection.

In voting intentions, New Democracy leads with 28%, followed by PASOK (13.8%), Greek Solution (12.1%), and Course of Freedom (9.4%).

Support for new parties led by former prime ministers remains weak. Over 73% said they would not vote for a party led by Alexis Tsipras, and nearly 80% rejected the idea of a party under Antonis Samaras. A potential party led by Tempe victims’ representative Maria Karystianou was also viewed unfavorably by 50% of respondents.
