PM Mitsotakis: Greece will recognize Palestinian statehood “at the right time”

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis announced on Sunday that Greece intends to recognize a Palestinian state, stressing that the decision will be taken at the appropriate time to contribute meaningfully to peace efforts.

“Greece will recognize the state of Palestine. The question is when and how, and choosing the right timing so that this recognition provides additional momentum towards what I believe should be the final goal — a two-state solution,” Mitsotakis said during a press conference at the 89th Thessaloniki International Fair (TIF).

The Prime Minister also defended Greece’s strong ties with Israel, while underlining that this has not prevented Athens from expressing concern over the humanitarian tragedy unfolding in Gaza.

“Our strategic relationship with Israel has not stopped us from strongly criticizing the way it is conducting its operation in Gaza — the unimaginable pain and loss of life caused by the war,” he said.

Mitsotakis reiterated that Greece has consistently called for an immediate ceasefire, both in direct diplomatic contacts and at the United Nations Security Council, where Athens is serving as a non-permanent member.

According to the Prime Minister, a ceasefire must ensure the release of hostages held by Hamas and bring an end to the suffering of civilians in the region.
