Ömer Faruk Tekbilek mesmerizes audience with mystical tunes at Kavala Castle
Renowned world music artist Ömer Faruk Tekbilek delivered a magical performance at Kavala Castle on the evening of Saturday, July 12, enchanting audiences with his unique fusion of Eastern and Western melodies.
Held at the Kavala Castle Open-Air Theatre, the concert attracted a large and diverse crowd, including music lovers from across Greece and Turkey. Among the notable attendees were Turkey’s Consul General in Komotini, Aykut Ünal, and his wife İlayda Ünal, as well as FEP Party President Çiğdem Asafoğlu.
For nearly two hours, Tekbilek took the audience on a spiritual and emotional musical journey, blending traditional instruments such as the ney, bağlama, and zurna with modern harmonies. He was accompanied by his son on darbuka and a group of international musicians.
His expansive repertoire featured Sufi music, folk tunes, improvisations, and original compositions, along with interpretations of works by legendary Greek composer Mikis Theodorakis.
One of the most captivating moments of the evening was the inclusion of whirling dervish performances on stage, which, combined with the historic setting of the castle, created a deeply spiritual and ceremonial ambiance.
Born in Adana, Turkey, in 1951 and based in the United States for many years, Ömer Faruk Tekbilek is celebrated for integrating mystical Sufi elements into contemporary world music. His Kavala performance stands as a testament to music’s ability to transcend borders and connect cultures through shared emotion and reverence.
