Morning Athens–Kavala flight suspended amid peak tourist season
Authorities and local organizations in Kavala have strongly protested the sudden decision by Olympic Air / Aegean Airlines to suspend the morning Athens–Kavala flight, a vital connection especially during the peak of the summer tourist season.
The suspension takes effect Monday, July 28, 2025, forcing travelers to rely solely on the evening flight, making same-day travel for business or urgent matters in Athens virtually impossible.
The decision has sparked significant backlash from regional leaders, who will hold a joint press conference on Tuesday, July 22, 2025. Confirmed participants include:
Thodoros Markopoulos, Deputy Governor of Kavala
Thodoros Mouriadis, Mayor of Kavala
Giannis Panagiotidis, President of the Kavala Chamber of Commerce
Additionally, Thassos Mayor Eleftherios Kyriakidis strongly condemned the move, stating:
“The suspension of the morning flights between Athens and Kavala is a clear act of regional degradation and a step backward. It is unacceptable to ignore the needs of an entire region — its residents and hundreds of thousands of visitors.
The Municipality of Thassos is ready to support any initiative aimed at forming a united front across the regional bodies against this inconceivable development in the year 2025.”
The morning route has been a crucial travel option for both residents and tourists. Its cancellation during the summer, when demand is highest, has raised questions about the airline’s long-term commitment to regional connectivity.
