Authorities said the suspect, a Bulgarian national serving a life sentence, fired three shots at the victim, who was also serving life imprisonment. Two bullets struck the victim in the head, while a third missed.

Witnesses told investigators the victim had been arguing with the chief guard inside the guard’s office over a transfer decision and allegedly attempted to draw a firearm. The suspect is reported to have seized the weapon and opened fire. Police said they are examining whether the incident unfolded as described or if other factors were involved.

Among those said to have witnessed the incident was convicted felon Alket Rizaj, who is serving two life sentences for double murder as well as an additional 25-year term linked to a helicopter escape from Korydallos prison.

The alleged shooter had previously been sentenced to life imprisonment for the 2018 murder of businessman John Makris in Voula, southern Athens, and is reportedly known to authorities as a contract killer operating in Greece and other European countries.

Investigators are also probing how the firearm entered the prison and why three inmates were present in the guard’s office, which was not equipped with surveillance cameras, police said.
