Hellenic Police launch “Zero Tolerance” helmet campaign nationwide
The Hellenic Police (ELAS) launched a nationwide “Zero Tolerance for Non-Use of Helmets” campaign today, aiming to improve road safety and reduce the high number of deaths and serious injuries resulting from motorcycle and e-vehicle accidents.
Despite ongoing inspections, authorities report that non-use of helmets remains a critical factor in the severity of traffic accidents. The campaign, led by the Traffic Services of ELAS, targets riders of motorcycles, mopeds, tricycles, rental vehicles, and light personal electric vehicles (E.P.E.O.), including professional delivery drivers.
Key actions of the campaign include:
Systematic helmet compliance checks for both riders and passengers by traffic police units across the country.
Targeted inspections of two-wheeler rental companies and delivery employers to ensure they meet safety and labor regulations.
Strict enforcement of penalties for violations, in accordance with the new Road Traffic Code (Law 5209/2025).
Collaboration with public and private organizations to promote traffic safety education and foster a culture of collective responsibility.
Authorities emphasized that the new legal framework delivers a clear message: there will be zero tolerance for non-use of helmets. The goal is to create a fairer and more effective system that reflects modern urban and semi-urban traffic risks.
In its statement, ELAS stressed that wearing a helmet is not only a legal duty, but a personal and social responsibility:
“It is the simplest, most accessible, and often decisive act that saves lives.”
