Greece is bracing for a severe heatwave expected to sweep across the country from Sunday through Wednesday, with temperatures likely to exceed 40°C in several regions, according to an extreme weather warning issued by the National Meteorological Service (EMY).

The heat will begin building on Saturday, initially affecting western and northern areas such as Macedonia. By Sunday, high temperatures will spread across the mainland and the Ionian Sea, with maximums reaching 38–39°C in Macedonia, Thessaly, Epirus, and western Central Greece, and slightly lower on the islands.

Monday is forecast to bring the peak of the heatwave, with inland areas expected to reach 40°C and, in some places, 41°C. Coastal regions will be slightly cooler—by about 2 to 4 degrees—but humidity will be low and nighttime temperatures in urban areas are unlikely to fall below 26–28°C.

The intense heat is expected to ease slightly in the Ionian and western mainland by Tuesday and Wednesday. However, temperatures could rise further along the eastern mainland and the Aegean, possibly reaching 41–42°C in some inland areas.

Authorities are urging the public to stay hydrated, avoid unnecessary outdoor activity during peak hours, and check on vulnerable populations such as the elderly and young children.
